The truth is that, for me, a weekend in Bansko begins before I even arrive.
Whether it is Thursday or Friday does not really matter. The moment we set off, something already feels different.
And when I arrive, I have a little ritual.
First, I step out onto the balcony. If it’s cold outside, I settle onto the sofa and look towards Pirin.
That is when I know — the weekend has begun.
I never quite know what this weekend will be
That is one of the things I love most about Bansko.
Every weekend can be completely different.
Sometimes we drink coffee almost until lunchtime and only then slowly make our way towards the centre.
Another time, we decide to go to Bachevo and the riding centre.
And sometimes we simply get in the car and head somewhere without much of a plan.
There is no strict itinerary.
And perhaps that is the best part.
Sometimes, simply being there is more than enough.
Mornings are my time
I always wake up early.
In the warmer months, I take my coffee out onto the terrace. In winter, I stay warm on the sofa.
But the view is the same — Pirin.
I can simply sit and look at it.
Winter mornings are usually a little quicker — coffee, breakfast and off towards the ski area.
If we are not skiing, there is no reason to rush. A slow coffee, a ride on the gondola up to Banderishka Polyana, and the day has already begun beautifully.
In spring, summer and autumn, the choice is even easier:
Wherever our eyes take us.
It might be a walk towards Yavorov Hut, Popovo Lake or simply somewhere that appeals to us that day.
And sometimes I want something completely different — to stay in town, visit the Neofit Rilski House Museum, wander through the old streets and remind myself that Bansko carries far more history than the part we see around the ski area.
Autumn is especially beautiful.
The mountains change colour and every walk feels a little different.
Do not rush
If I could give only one piece of advice for a short weekend in Bansko, it would be this:
Do not try to see everything.
Bansko is not a place for ticking boxes.
You do not need a programme from morning until night, rushing from one place to the next.
After a good walk, I’m happy to sit somewhere along Pirin Street with a coffee.
I watch people pass, time goes by, and I am in no hurry at all.
For me, that is part of Bansko too.
If we are hungry...
For a quick weekend with friends, I would choose something traditional.
Banski Han is one of the places I would head to for food and a cosy atmosphere.
And if we fancy an evening with a little more energy — Bay Kotse Mehana, for traditional food and a fire show.
But I would not make a huge list here either.
Sometimes the best evening is simply the one spent with the right people.
If it is just the two of you
To a couple coming for a romantic weekend, I would say one thing:
Do not rush.
Enjoy the time together.
Pirin.
A long coffee.
A spa day.
Sun by the pool, or a hot tub when it is cold outside.
You do not need ten activities to leave with a lovely memory.
Sometimes the quiet, the mountains and the person beside you are enough.
With children, every weekend can be different
With children, you can discover Bansko again and again.
One weekend it is a simple walk in the park.
The next, Rila Fun Park.
Then the rope park in Dobrinishte.
Another time it is a pool, horses, or simply a whole day outdoors.
That is exactly what I like — the next weekend does not have to repeat the last one.
There is always more to discover.
Saturday evening
For me, a lovely Saturday evening does not have to be noisy.
Sometimes it is a late walk in the park.
Sometimes dinner with the family.
And sometimes we simply sit and watch the sunset.
Those are the moments when you do not need anything more.
And Sunday? Even slower
On Sunday morning, I refuse to rush.
Coffee becomes even slower.
I do not want to start thinking immediately about packing, the journey home and the end of the weekend.
And sometimes Bansko makes the decision for us.
One weekend, we were meant to leave on Sunday.
We woke up to so much snow, and it was so beautiful that we simply decided:
We are staying.
And we stayed on into the week.
That is exactly what I mean when I say that not everything in Bansko needs to be planned.
The little things at Mila Stays
I want people who come to stay for just two days to have that same feeling.
That is why the apartments always have those little things we sometimes forget when packing quickly for a weekend away.
Coffee and tea.
A toothbrush and toothpaste.
Hair ties.
Dental floss.
Little things that do not make a holiday on their own.
But when you need one of them and find it there, you realise that someone thought about you before you arrived.
Is Bansko worth it for just a weekend?
Yes.
It is worth coming even for two days.
But not because you can see everything in one weekend.
Quite the opposite.
Bansko is not a one-weekend place.
It is something to experience little by little.
Come once for the snow.
Another time for the green mountains.
Then for the autumn colours, the pool, a long coffee, or simply because you want to see Pirin again.
So if all you have is Friday evening to Sunday, come.
Not to see everything, but to give your heart the chance to fall in love and want to come back again.
Because Bansko has never been only about snow and skiing.
