To me, summer in Bansko smells like freedom.
You can hear the birds early in the morning; the mountains turn green and seem to wake up just to say:
‘Hey, I’m still here without the snow.’
Many people still associate Bansko mainly with winter, skiing and snow. The truth is that the town is just as alive in summer — life simply moves somewhere else.
People are no longer up in the ski area. You meet them in the centre, in the park, along Pirin Street, over a long coffee or at one of the many summer events.
And that is exactly what I love — there is always something happening, but you do not need to have a plan.
Sometimes the best plan is no plan at all
If someone asks me what to do in Bansko in summer, I would not give them a strict timetable from morning until night.
I would say: wake up, have a long coffee and see where the day takes you.
If you love the mountains, choose a walk that suits your level of experience.
If you are not particularly sporty, that is absolutely fine. Wander through the centre and along Pirin Street, find somewhere lovely for lunch and simply do not rush. There are plenty of places, each with its own charm.
And if you are here as a couple — perhaps the mountains, a spa day, or a late coffee followed by wherever your heart takes you.
That is what summer here gives you — the freedom not to know in advance how the day will end.
When we feel like a little more excitement
Banderishka Polyana feels completely different in summer from how it does during the ski season. There are activities and things to do, and it can easily turn into a full day out.
On other days, we choose a pool.
We love Banya for its mineral water, while Dobrinishte is perfect when we simply want to spend the day by the pool.
Sometimes we get in the car without much of a plan — the Bear Park near Belitsa, Rila Fun Park, or even a beach in the direction of Greece.
There are so many possibilities around Bansko that we never have to repeat the same day twice.
And that is part of its charm.
A little taste of the area
There are a few places in the area that we happily return to.
At Izvoro Fish Restaurant in Betolovoto, I love the large garden, the fresh fish and, of course, the deer. They always make each visit feel a little more special.
Babuch is one of those places that still feels like a real Bulgarian mehana — cosy, unpretentious and full of delicious food.
If you go, try the homemade bread and the thick bean stew.
I recommend these places not because they belong on some must-do list, but because I would genuinely go back myself.
A little beyond the obvious
Between Bansko and Dobrinishte there is a place that is easy to miss — the Nameless City in the St Nicholas area.
These are exactly the sorts of places I love.
They are not the loudest attractions and they are unlikely to be the first thing you see in the tourist photographs, but they have their own history and that lovely feeling of discovering something for yourself.
For anyone who loves cycling, the area also offers plenty of routes and possibilities.
I should admit something here — I still do not ride a bike.
Not yet, at least.
Perhaps that will be one of my next goals in Bansko.
And who knows — one day there might even be a separate story about that adventure.
Summer has brought people into my life too
One of my favourite summer memories has nothing to do with a particular attraction.
It was meeting a wonderful family — Pavkata and Svetleto.
As we talked, we realised that we already somehow ‘knew’ each other. We had heard stories about one another without ever having met.
And suddenly everything fell into place.
I love encounters like that.
They are another reason not to plan every minute. Sometimes the best thing about a day is exactly the thing you never expected.
And then comes the sunset
No matter how many places we have visited during the day, one of my favourite parts of summer is very simple.
The terrace.
The sunset.
The quiet.
I love watching the light change over the mountains. Sometimes the sky is calm and golden; other times a summer storm rolls in.
Even the storms are beautiful here.
That is how I like to end the day — unhurried, looking out at the view, with that lovely feeling that, right now, there is nowhere else I need to be.
And yes — Bansko has culture. Lots of it.
This may be one of the biggest surprises for people who only know Bansko in winter.
Summer is full of events.
Bansko Jazz Fest, Bansko Rock Fest, Bansko Nomad Fest, Bansko Opera Fest, Summer Film Mania Under the Stars, ‘Feel Bansko’, sporting events, concerts and festivals are just some of the things that bring the town to life through the season.
Jazz, rock, opera, cinema under the stars, sport, traditions and people from all over the world.
Believe me — Bansko is very much alive in summer.

Because you do not need snow to feel the mountains.
You can spend the day having adventures, or you can do almost nothing at all.
Go to a pool. Take a walk. Discover somewhere new. Linger over coffee in the centre. Or get in the car and see where the day takes you.
This is what I would recommend:
Wake up at least once with no plan and no destination, and see what the day has in store for you.
Because Bansko is not only snow and skiing.
To me, Bansko is freedom, mountains, people, experiences and culture for everyone.
